Barcelona’s Air Quality Improvement Plan encompasses a series of steps that are being taken in the city in order to combat air pollution, in addition to details of future plans and projects.
The plan’s main goal is to establish a number of strategic measures in different areas that affect air quality in order to channel efforts more effectively into improving the situation.
One of the problems faced by big cities is the concentration of certain air pollutants with local effects, such as nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particles in suspension. Like other big metropolises, including Paris, London and Berlin, Barcelona and its metropolitan area exceed the NO2 limits established by the EU for the protection of the population’s health, thus necessitating the adoption of measures to improve the quality of the air.
In this regard, different fields of action are proposed, such as an increase in the number of charge points for electric vehicles and motorcycles. Barcelona City Council plans to promote the use of electric vehicles in the municipality by increasing the number of charge points for plug-in motorcycles and electric vehicles during the next few years. Likewise, it aims to promote the use of vehicles powered by natural gas, since they will also help to reduce pollution.
