With the support of Going Green, a company which specialises in electric mobility solutions, Barcelona is now the first city in the world to set up a flexible all-electric motorbike rental service for citizens and visitors, under the name MOTIT. As a member of the MOLECULES European Consortium, Barcelona City Council is supporting this private project through a collaborative agreement.
Unlike other similar services, MOTIT allows users to pick up and drop off the electric motorbikes wherever they want in the city. This system is possible thanks to the use of new technologies, the Internet and Smartphone, which control the whole process of renting the vehicle. As for the payment method, the vehicle can be rented based on usage time or distance travelled. The service also has the added benefit of having a navigator to guide users to their destination and the option of using the helmet that is supplied with each bike.
The objective of this initiative, which now has 400 subscribed users, is to provide the city with a flexible mode of transport while promoting electric mobility in the city. In the near future, MOTIT hopes to extend the service to other European cities and even to cities in the USA. Talks are current in progress with 10 cities regarding its progressive implantation
