With a view to improving the training of future drivers, the Spanish Road Traffic Authority (DGT) has made changes in the driving test that introduce a more practical component.
Based on the directives of the European Union, the new tests evaluates whether the driver is able to drive with autonomy and efficiency from the energy standpoint. Firstly it assesses whether the future driver is able to take decisions independently based on the traffic situation by observing and interpreting the direction indications and traffic signs, and secondly whether, once the test has concluded, whether the candidate has driven the vehicle taking into account savings in fuel and reducing contamination caused by traffic.
According to the DGT, despite the changes made, the change in the practical test has not led to a reduction in the number of persons passing the test since it took effect on 21 January.[:]
