The electrical Bicing in Barcelona began the first phase of the pilot program, which will put in the streets 23 stations and 150 bikes that can be access by a total of 1,500 subscribers of the conventional system. From late January on, the test will double the offer and will expand to 46 stations and 300 bikes with a total of 4,000 subscribers.
To be a user of the electric Bicing you must be a subscriber of the conventional service, a requirement that rewards loyalty to the system. More than those 4,000 users, the ones that want to use the public electric bike will become part of a new list. that will work as a waiting list in case there is service cancelations, or for the final implementation phase that will happen in 2017. The free electric Bicing lasts until the end of January, except when the user makes use of the bike for more than half an hour. From February on it will be necessary to pay a supplement of 14 euros per year, which will be added to the normal payment of conventional Bicing.
During the two year duration of the pilot, the stations – 41 in parking lots and 5 in the street will play the usual pattern: a totem with an information screen and the device to swipe the card and the bars with 12 bikes which gets charged while in the anchorage – and the novelty of a closet where it will be the chargers.
The electric bikes have an aluminum frame, and this makes them lighter (23 kilos). The battery is integrated into the frame and the engine is at the rear. The bike responds to the system of “assisted pedaling”: even if the engine has started, only moves when you pedal. It has two conventional gears (changing the plate) and three levels of power to the electric motor. Also, on the right handlebar it is incorporated a help system to boot, very useful if you start pedaling uphill. Vehicles arrive to 20 mph and have a range of up to 40 kilometers. This autonomy depends on the use made of the electric motor, for example, if used less it helps the system to start or if the low levels are used in the electric mode.
The Bicing administrators are aware that most of the 6,000 bicycles of the system will inevitably spread to the stations in the lower part of the city. Therefore, the electric Bicing is intended mainly for commuting between sea and mountains, a logical consequence of the topography of Barcelona.
